Current study and revelations from a research administered by the International Agency for research on Cancer (IARC) in association with National Cancer Institute, United States America, revealed a scary estimation that by 2030, 30 million people on earth, making up to 39.6% of both male and female living with cancer in the world will die.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Vice President’s wife, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, on behalf of the country’s Federal Government has erected a radiotherapy centre with a new multi-leave lenear accelerator equipment to treat cancer at the National Hospital, Abuja, which targets stemming medical tourism overseas.
While commissioning the centre, she recognised the efforts of the Federal Ministry of Health and the hospital management to make the project achievable.
She outlined the death of about 15,000 Nigerians yearly as incredible and gave an assurance that the present government under the leadership of President Buhari would make sure that outstanding health delivery system is replaced.
“I await that day the cure of cancer shall finally arrive but I am happy that in spite of the insufficient resources, the country is taking big steps in the right direction, installing of the machine, cancer patients will have hope that they will be assisted with the facility,”
The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, who gave the cancer statics at the time of commissioning, noted pitifully, that cancer had been one of the most fatal topmost causes of death o earth.
According to him, study by the institutes mentioned above disclosed that 12.7 million new cases of cancer was recorded in 2008 with 7.6 million cancer-related death noted. By 2012, the figure of death worldwide upsurged by 100% to 14 million.
“Sadly, Nigeria has the largest number of cancer cases in Africa as 100,000 new cases recorded annually and 15% death noted making 20% of Africa`s death ratio.
He went further to say that according to the analysis of international atomic energy of all countries observed in 2013, only South Africa and Egypt possess the material ability of cancer management and treatment, he further promised the devotion of the government to upgrade 7 more cancer centres in the 2018 budget so as to reduce the burden of cancer and related death rates.
